2011 Audi A2 Concept Car debut at Frankfurt Motor Show.

Audi’s alpha-numerical line-up for its’A family’ is giving birth to a new model 2011 Audi A2 Concept in a few weeks at the Frankfurt Motor Show. At this rate, the German automaker will only need to come out with an A9 and an A10 to complete numbers 1-10. But that’s neither here nor there because the first order of business is the newest member of the family, the 2011 Audi A2 Concept. The 2011 Audi A2 Concept is just 3.80 meters (12.47 ft) long, 1.69 meters (5.54 ft) wide and 1.49 meters (4.89 ft) high; even so, it makes an elegant, powerful and sporty impression on the street. Its clean appearance concentrates on the essentials; all details are subtle but shaped for visual impact. The dark glass roof of the white-painted show car switches to transparency with the push of a button.

Power comes from a 114 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque electric motor driving the front wheels. This motor is linked to a lithium-ion battery stored in the floor that takes just 1.5 hours to charge using a custom 400 volt charger, or around 4 hours using a regular household power outlet. It stores 31 kWh of energy, 24 kWh of which is usable. The driving range is a claimed 124 miles, while the 0-60 mph sprint will take you 9.3 seconds and top speed is limited to 93 mph. The entire thing weighs only 2,535 pounds, which is about the same weight as the smaller Audi A1 and very impressive for an electric car. The key is its construction, which is a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber.

The colors and materials in the interior support the impression of lightness and functionality. The large areas from the door top shoulders to the floor bear a new and innovative covering material made of polyurethane with a neoprene surface feel; a ribbed material made from recycled polyester covers the central floor area. The seat shells are made with a plastic blow molding technique. Aluminum elements create highlights the cockpit. That last part comes from 2011 Audi A2 Concept themselves so until we know more about the car; we’re going to have to take their word for it. Not that the wait should be long since Frankfurt is just around the corner.
