Today, Ford has finally given up its game of deception and revealed the 2012 Ford Fiesta ST concept five-door in concept form – the car our spies had caught on multiple occasions in both North America and Europe despite Ford denying its existence. The Fiesta ST will have an altered body for improved cooling, but may be available only as a five-door hatch. Ford first showed off the Fiesta ST concept at the Frankfurt show earlier this year, touting the five-door concept as a go-fast version of the popular global subcompact. Now Ford has unveiled a five-door version of the Ford Fiesta ST, which will go on display at the Los Angeles auto show later this month. In back, the Ford Fiesta ST features a diffuser with twin-exit exhaust. The car has been lowered, with wide wheel arches, 17-inch alloys, and a full body kit.
Ford unveiled a five-door 2012 Ford Fiesta ST Concept a couple of months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show, causing many to speculate that the U.S. may get a five-door model for itself, but now with the unveiling of this concept it is clear that Ford will stick to five-door fiestas. Showing off the five-door version in L.A. lends us hope that the hot Fiesta ST might make its way to our shores. The automaker is launching them at least six months apart and trying to give the Fiesta as much of a sport focus as possible, while selling the Focus with more of an upscale feel. So expect the Fiesta to carry a directly injected, turbocharged 1.6-liter four.
Ford has confirmed the Focus ST for the U.S. market beginning in 2012. It’s a joint project from Ford’s European RS and North American Special Vehicle Team. The new 2012 Ford Fiesta ST Concept replaces the old model’s distinctive-sounding five-cylinder engine with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four with twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox. Ford isn’t talking official horsepower and torque yet, though the European Ford ST unveiled at the Frankfurt show in September has been pegged at 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. The Fiesta ST hatchback unveiled at L.A. gained two rear doors from the Frankfurt car, as it’s not sold here in two-door hatchback form. Its 1.6-liter EcoBoost four “achieves a target output” of 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, Ford says. Transmission is a six-speed manual. As with the Focus ST, the Fiesta ST‘s bodywork emphasizes the large trapezoidal grille located low on its nose, a design cue that the 2013 Fusion coming to January’s Detroit show will update.
Hameedi said the 2012 Ford Fiesta ST Concept should manage the 0-to-60-mph sprint in about seven seconds, and would be capable of a top speed of at least 140 mph. We don’t know the Fiesta ST‘s price yet, but one would think it couldn’t go much higher than $23,000, with rivals like the Nissan Sentra SE-R coming in at $20,000 and the Civic Si smack at $23,000. The Ford Focus ST was only a concept car when it debuted at the Paris auto show in 2010, and now the car is a confirmed production model that will go on sale some time next year.
