2012 Honda Civic EU Version is a Hatchback

2012 Honda Civic EU Version updated Euro-market.

2012 Honda Civic EU Version – The Honda Civic has long since made its American debut, and we’ve scored seat time in a variety of versions. Our Civic is different than the one our European friends get to drive, however, and the updated Euro-market Honda Civic has been revealed to the awaiting crowds at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. For starters, the European Civic is a hatchback, not a sedan. As such, the European model has very little in common with the one sold in the States and elsewhere.

On the powertrain side, 2012 Honda Civic EU Version hasn’t done enough. Although the automaker used to be regarded as one of the world’s most progressive engine-makers, these days it looks out of step with the European market. European buyers are busily downsizing, and gasoline engines in this category tend to be torque-rich direct-injection turbos such as the Ford Ecoboost or Mini 1.6s, or even a 1.2 and 1.4 from Volkswagen. Honda is sticking with port-injected 1.4 and 1.8 VTECs. The 1.4 makes a scant 94 lb-ft. All the engines are combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, ECO Assist, advanced fueling control technology and Idle Stop. They are also equipped with Hill Start Assist. The 1.8 l engine can be paired with a specially designed 5-speed automatic transmission of Honda Civic EU Version.

The previous 2012 Honda Civic EU Version was set up with a jittery ride and sharp steering. Fun, but tiring on a long trip. It didn’t suit the buyers – families, commuters, and business travelers who spend a lot of time on highways. So Honda Civic used the model change to up rate the NVH isolation. It went back to the source with, among other measures, new fluid-filled bushings for the rear suspension. Even more significant, the springs have been softened off. Honda did consider moving the European and American Civics closer together with this generation, but as the project went along they drifted apart again. There’s a lot to like about the Euro car, and its character seems very different from the U.S. one. But both of them seem, in different ways, to have needed a bit more money spent on them. Maybe a single world-car program would have been the way to do it.

Pricing for the 2012 Honda Civic EU Version is largely unchanged from the 2011 models. The cheapest version, the DX coupe, starts at $16,355; its sedan counterpart starts $200 higher at $16,555. The LX adds important items such as A/C, power locks, and cruise control, as well as $2050 to the sticker of both the coupe and sedan. For $20,455 (coupe) or $21,255 (sedan), the EX heaps a sunroof, an upgraded stereo, and another 12-volt power outlet on top of the LX. (EX coupes are available with the manual, but EX sedans only come with the automatic.) Another $1500 nets an EX with nav—and removes the option of a stick in the coupe—and $1450 more gets an EX-L—L for leather. If you want nav and leather, it’s going to set you back $24,205 for a coupe or sedan.
