Fiat 500 is the first model that is less powerful than the latest Fiat here, 2014 Fiat 500L and 2014 Fiat 500L Trekking one of the few successes of trekking in the line of modern Fiat. The new 2014 Fiat 500L model makes its North American debut in Los Angeles along with the world premier of the more active-lifestyle oriented 2014 Fiat 500L Trekking variant. Going on sale here in mid-2013, these multipurpose 5-door “large” variations on the basic platform deliver increased real-world utility courtesy of their 5-passenger seating and a generous 23.1 cu-ft of stow space in the rear cargo bay.
Witness the Fiat 500L Trekking, seen above. It’s a full 26-inches longer than the regular 500, and it’s grown six-inches taller and wider. All that stretching means there is 42 percent more interior room in the 500L than the standard car, which means it’s a good thing the only engine available is Fiat’s 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo four-cylinder engine, as seen in the Abarth, with 160-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Even with European roots, most 500L buyers will spec the optional 6-speed DDCT (Dual Dry Clutch Transmission) automatic rather than the standard 6-speed manual transmission. The combo of the dual-clutch and the turbo four was a dud in our latest Dart test, but maybe another few months of fiddling can sort out the 500L.
